Michelin Guide suggests 2 day-tour in Ha Noi

(TITC) – Michelin Guide published an article suggesting a two-day tour in Ha Noi with a range of delicious street foods and interesting tourist attractions.

According to the Michelin Guide, Ha Noi is the ideal city when it comes to street food. To survive and develop, the eateries here have overcome countless taste tests, conquering the famous gourmets.

During 2 days in Ha Noi, diners can explore a variety of delicious dishes such as pho, banh cuon (steamed rice rolls), cha ca or bun cha.

Day 1

There is nothing more perfect than starting a new day with beef pho – one of the most favourite breakfast dishes of Hanoians in particular and Vietnamese people in general.

Beef pho

Located on Au Trieu Street, Hoan Kiem District, Pho Au Trieu (or Pho Tu Lun) is a familiar address for famous gourmet diners in the old town, also a MICHELIN Guide 2024 Bib Gourmand restaurant on a street which runs parallel to St. Joseph Cathedral. The pho at the restaurant has a cloudy, fatty, thick and quite rich broth in the style of Nam Dinh pho, not sweet, light and clear like traditional Ha Noi pho.

If you want to enjoy Pho Au Trieu, you should go early because the restaurant can quickly sell out due to the large number of customers.

To fill your stomach for lunch, diners can try the eel vermicelli specialty at Dong Thinh vermicelli – a restaurant awarded the Bib Gourmand 2024 for its delicious food and reasonable prices. The restaurant has been serving glass noodles with eel, greens, crushed peanuts and deep-fried shallots for more than four decades.

During the rest of the afternoon, visitors can look out for Bach Ma Temple, one of Ha Noi’s oldest places of worship, as well as Thuoc Bac street, where they can find decades-old shops selling traditional medicine.

Cha ca

According to the prestigious guide, tourists can finish their day with Chả Cá, a pan-fried fish with turmeric, noodles, and greens cooked right at the table at Chả Cá Thăng Long at 6B Duong Thanh street. The eatery is so popular it even has  establishments on the same street.

Day 2

Besides beef noodle soup, banh cuon is also a popular breakfast dish in Ha Noi. Steamed wet rice paper rolls with minced pork, at Bánh Cuốn Bà Xuân restaurant to begin their second day in Ha Noi.

Coming to Ha Noi, diners cannot miss the famous bun cha. Tuyết Bún Chả 34, a MICHELIN Guide 2024 Bib Gourmand street food joint, serves extraordinarily generous portions of rice vermicelli noodles, grilled pork, and fresh green herbs. This bustling eatery is close to Truc Bach Lake, Tran Quoc Pagoda and Quan Thanh Temple, all important sights with long histories. Spend the afternoon exploring, and don’t forget to have a drink by the water at sunset.

bun cha

At the end of the culinary journey in Ha Noi, tourists can try seafood at Oc Di Tu, which serves a dizzying variety of high-quality seafood delicacies in basic surroundings, such as prawns, clams, and cockles. MICHELIN inspectors were particularly impressed with the huge melo melo sea snails grilled with scallions and fried garlic and Venus clams with lemongrass, chilli and pineapple.

British journalist shares experience of overnighting in Son Doong Cave

(TITC) – Laura Sharman of Daily Mail called her overnighting in Son Doong (in Central of Vietnam) was like lying in a dark cocoon and eager to return.

Laura Sharman is a journalist and travel editor for the Daily Mail. The British journalist has experienced the journey to explore the world’s largest cave in Vietnam, Son Doong. Only 1,000 annual visitors are permitted into the caves in groups of 10.

The cave has been confirmed as the world’s largest by Vietnamese officials and Guinness World Records, which in 2012 stated that it is 655ft (200m) tall, 490 ft (150m) wide and ‘at least’ four miles (9km) long. Visitors will be awed with its sprawling jungle, river, and weather system, and enough space for a 60-storey skyscraper.

The journey begins when a minibus drops the group off at 9am at the top of the valley and then heads into the jungle. Water seeped through shoes as people waded through streams and rivers, but the shoes had the necessary grip to climb the steep slopes to the campsite at En Cave.

En Cave is the third largest cave in the world with a ceiling height of 145m and a width of about 200m. The scale of the cave is impressive, the only sound heard is the chirping of swallows. The cave is named after swallow (En in Vietnamese) because they nest here a lot.

At En Cave, while the porter prepares dinner, visitors can swim in the river. Then the group recharged their energies in preparation for the next day which required trekking through caves, wading across rivers and climbing hills.

When Laura Sharman descended by rappelling down to 80m, she realised that Son Doong Cave was still hidden very deep. The entrance to the giant cave gradually appeared as she lowered herself down and the temperature immediately dropped sharply.

After many climbs, everyone reached the second campsite located right inside the majestic Son Doong Cave. It was the moment everyone had been waiting for and it felt like stepping into another world. The cave walls are so high that words cannot describe them and you have to crane your neck to see.

The sunlight shining through the cave entrance brought out the green of the plants below. The sun was bright but not hot enough so the sand below was still cool. To her surprise, every essentials were set for the group to rest. “The night here became more comfortable and I looked forward to a good night’s sleep in this “dark cocoon””, stated Laura.

As the sun sank below the horizon, Laura pitched her tent on the sand. Her companions were busy setting up their sleeping mats for the night. Leaving the tent flap open, she lay on her sleeping bag and looked out at the magnificent surroundings.

The group pitched their tents on a very special sandbank, deep in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, inside the world’s largest cave, Son Doong. Exploring this place makes you feel like you’re walking inside the Earth.

“It’s the most surreal campsite I have ever encountered”, exclaimed Laura. Looking out from the tent door, she took a deep breath as the sun cast a mesmerising light across the cavernous space.

The sound of dripping water in the distance echoed like a gentle lullaby at night, and all around me were giant limestone walls.

Early in the morning, the space is misty. When looking at the first ray of sunlight through the cave, everyone thinks of the dense forest above. Now, after two days of climbing over rocks with ropes and ladders, Laura knows this place better.

The next day, the group climbed steep rock walls and threaded their way through small crevices to reach the cave forest. The still, cold air brought a freshness that was hard to find anywhere else. “We walked along, sharing the faint light with bats, spiders, fish, and scorpions”. But the only thing Laura saw were the shadows of bats as they swooped down from the cave ceiling at dusk or when disturbed by the headlamps of tourists.

Once the group came out of the cave, Laura watched the sun set again and everything was in full view. This was a beautiful moment after many days underground, but “I would trade it for another night of darkness if it meant returning to Son Doong”, declared Laura.

Son Doong is known as the world’s largest cave with a length of nearly 9km, inside there is a dense forest, underground river, its own ecosystem and weather, and a space estimated to contain a 60-storey building. Although discovered by locals in 1990, Son Doong was not officially put on the tourist map until 2013 with an exploration tour launched that year.

The Complex of Hue Monuments

Ngo Mon gate – the main entrance of forbidden Hue Imperial City in Hue city, Vietnam, during sunset time

In the central city of Hue you’ll find the last vestiges of the Nguyen Dynasty. Here, against a backdrop of forested hills with a meandering river at their feet, the Nguyen emperors erected administrative offices, military headquarters, palaces, temples and even their own tombs.

Vietnam’s feudal capital was strategically built along the banks of the Perfume River. The structures within the citadel were carefully laid out to be in cosmological alignment with the five elements, cardinal points and colours.

Take a leisurely amble around the complex and watch Imperial Vietnam come to life in full colour. Imposing statues, priceless treasures and intricate mosaics wait around every corner. Although the Nguyen Dynasty ended in 1945, the symbolic significance of the Hue Monuments–once the political, cultural and religious heart of Vietnam–still echoes today.

Ha Long Bay

In terms of geological and geomorphological value, Ha Long Bay is an excellent example of mature karst in humid tropical conditions with a complete karst evolution process spanning 20 million years thanks to the simultaneous combination of factors, such as thick limestone layers, a hot and humid climate and slow tectonic uplift. Ha Long Bay has all the basic forms of karst terrain, such as karst plains, funnels and valleys, karst peaks and towers, especially the Fengcong and Fengling karst terrains, which are typical of the final development stage of the tropical karst process.

The geological and geomorphological value of Ha Long Bay is also demonstrated through its rich cave system, formed 2,000,000 – 11,000 years ago. The process of sea flooding and sea erosion has made the karst geomorphology of Ha Long Bay unique in the world, fundamental to geomorphology science and of global significance. The Heritage Area has 775 islands, mostly limestone islands, with 66 caves, 42 marshes, 81 lakes inside the limestone islands and 193 sandbanks discovered along with a rich fossil system.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is located in Bo Trach and Minh Hoa Districts, Quang Binh Province. Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2003, the Park covered 85,754 hectares. With this extension, the site covers a total surface area of 123,326 hectares (a 46 % increase).

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is truly a wonderful underground world since it consists of caves, lakes, rivers, beaches and reefs, incredible stalactites… In case you only know about Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park via the Son Doong Cave adventure tour. Here, you can enjoy tons of activities that bring you closer to nature.

Trang An Landscape Complex

Ninh Binh has long enchanted visitors with a melding of sacred temples, serene countryside, and dramatic karsts. Three elements come together to render this one of Vietnam’s top heritage sites: the Hoa Lu Ancient Capital – the national seat of power in the 10th and 11th centuries – the Trang An Scenic Complex, and the Hoa Lu Forest.

Ninh Binh’s sublime landscape is made of karst peaks and towers, which rise steeply up from the valley below, itself covered in tranquil waterways and lush rice paddies. Traditional sampans rowed by local guides glide gently along the current, beneath dripping grottoes and past dense rainforest. Take a short climb to the mossy pagodas and viewpoints on the cliffs, and you’ll have the entire panorama at your feet.

Hoi An Ancient Town

Cycling in Hoi An, Quang Nam Province

Hoi An was once a bustling trading port, welcoming merchants from far across the seas. Between the 15th and 19th centuries, Chinese, Japanese and Europeans settled along the banks of the winding Thu Bon River. Today, 30 hectares of this ancient town is preserved as a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site.

Hoi An’s unique fusion of cultural influences reveals itself within its narrow streets. Weathered shop-houses squeeze shoulder-to-shoulder alongside ancestral homes, their tiled roofs decorated in exotic wood carvings. Tucked away from the old ferry quay, you’ll find an open market, pagodas and a timber bridge that once connected the town’s Japanese and Chinese communities. Hoi An is even better in the evenings, when the faded streets glow in the light of thousands of lanterns.

Lost in Buckwheat fields of Ha Giang

(TITC) – Buckwheat flowers have become the signature of Ha Giang. Visitors flock to the remote northern province of Viet Nam (near the border of China) in late autumn to gaze in awe, photograph and celebrate these buckwheat beauties.

Photo: Nguyen Huu Thong

However, buckwheat flowers are far more than just the symbol of Ha Giang but a saviour, a source of nutrition of villagers. As legend has it, rice and corn fairies first planted the buckwheat seeds in a far-off, mountain creek for their own personal pleasure. But a time came when the rice and corn fields went barren and the people of the region were facing famine. To save themselves, the villagers split up, going separate ways in search of food and nourishment. One day, an intoxicating scent was picked up by the scouts. Literally following their noses, they came upon a mountain creek and a vast swath of white-pink blooms – blossoms of hope.

Upon closer inspection, the trekkers discovered seeds nestled beneath the flower petals. The seeds were gathered and cooked and to everyone’s delight, they found a scrumptious alternative to rice and corn. The seeds from the pleasantly fragrant buckwheat flowers became a staple.

In late September the white blooms make their annual appearance. As October slides into November, the blossoms change to pink. By December’s end they become a lusty, deep red.

Imagine nearly 1,000 acres of color-evolving, buckwheat bloom. And while this visual extravaganza is on full display from October through December, there is an annual festival which typically takes place in mid-to-late November.

The festival (in the Dong Van district) immerses visitors in cultural displays of the local ethnic minorities (Hmong, Tay, Dao, Nung, Chechens and Cao Lan). There is art, performance, crafts and food (including buckwheat pancakes, porridge, noodles, cakes, even wine). Stroll the floral road on Dong Van ancient street or enjoy the “Running on Happiness Road” marathon. There is even kayak and paddle-board racing on the Nho Que River

Ha Giang is a trekkers delight-vast wilderness, granite mountains, caves, rivers, valleys, dense forests, imposing cliffs, tiny settlements and, of course, that sea of flowering buckwheat-as far as the eye can see.

If you can’t attend the festival, fear not, the entire buckwheat bloom season is a celebration of visual and olfactory sensations-the surrounding culture is very much alive and vibrant.

Here are a few recommended locations to best observe the blossoming ritual of the buckwheat flower:

Thach Son Than is located in the Dong Van Karst Plateau, which is a UNESCO Global Geopark. The flowers follow the winding road and provide views to terraced fields of blossoms interspersed with naturally carved, millions of years old, stone statues.

Lung Cam village is located in the scenic Sung La Valley (25 km west of Dong Van). This is where you’ll find the greatest abundance of buckwheat flower blooms. In Lung Cam you can visit the home of Pao, which inspired the classic film: Story of Pao. Three ethnic groups co-exist in this age-old village.

At an altitude of 1,500 meters, the Ma Pi Leng pass (aka The Happiness Road), seems like a continuous “S” curve – a biker/trekker dream with breathtaking views. The buckwheat fields are planted between the two mountain ranges offering astonishing visuals.
