Experience with culinary passport

Many domestic and international tourists arriving at the airport or visiting service locations in Da Nang city express delight when receiving a very special passport: the culinary passport.

Tourists arriving at Da Nang Airport are warmly welcomed and presented with gifts, including a culinary passport.

The culinary passport becomes part of a traveler’s backpack essentials, connecting every visitor to 50 selected restaurants that have been carefully vetted and strictly monitored for food safety by local authorities.

After finishing their meals at a restaurant, each table of guests was introduced by staff to the culinary passport program launched by Da Nang’s tourism sector. All guests had to do was present their passport, and the staff would flip it open and stamp it with a unique red seal bearing the words DaNang Food Tour.”

The Culinary Passport Project, launched in late 2024, offers tourists a unique food experience in Da Nang. At each stop, they get a red “DaNang Food Tour” stamp. The more stamps collected, the more dining discounts and chances to win prizes worth millions of VND.

Some guests are even gifted fresh oysters after meals. The passport mimics a real travel document but highlights local food spots. In March, a major food festival featuring 200 regional and global dishes was held along the East Sea, celebrating the city’s vibrant culinary scene.

The Da Nang Foodtour campaign combines with the Culinary Passport to promote the city’s vibrant cuisine.

Da Nang’s Culinary Passport campaign is drawing much attention by promoting tourism through food experiences. Tourists receive a passport upon arrival, collect stamps at 50 certified restaurants, and enjoy dining discounts or prizes. Many keep it as a memorable souvenir.

Over 10,000 passports have been distributed. A digital food map at foodtourdanang.vn highlights 400 trusted eateries, including Michelin-recommended spots.

In early 2025, Da Nang recorded 1.6 million visitors, with food and beverage revenue up 18.6%, reaching nearly 3 trillion VND.

“Legacy of Culture” illuminates Da Nang’s Han River

On Saturday evening, the sky above the Han River shimmered with vibrant colors as the host team Da Nang – Viet Nam and the reigning champions JoHo Pyro Professional Fireworks AB from Finland kicked off the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF) 2025. Under the theme “Legacy of Culture”, each fireworks display told a story – a slice of emotion that touched the hearts of the audience.

The Han River sparkled brilliantly on the opening night of DIFF 2025

The host team from Da Nang – Viet Nam captivated the audience with an emotional and pride-filled performance, featuring a creatively choreographed fireworks display on international music such as ‘Bonjour Viet Nam’, ‘Titanium’, and ‘Top of the Rock’, painting a picture of a dynamic, globally connected, and ever-evolving city.

In 20 minutes, more than 5,000 fireworks lit up the sky in perfect harmony with the music, creating a magnificent symphony of light that delivered a powerful message of celebration to locals and visitors alike, marking the 50th anniversary of Da Nang’s Liberation.

The host team’s fireworks display was divided into four chapters: Fusion, Tribute, Integration, and Pioneering and Glory, narrating Viet Nam’s cultural journey to the global stage. IN PHOTO: Da Nang’s performance as seen from a riverside hotel along the Han River

From shimmering rain-like effects and soft color transitions to cascading fireworks and powerful simultaneous bursts that swept across the sky like crashing waves, the audience was swept away in a wave of emotions — from quiet reflection to explosive exhilaration

Following the performance of the host team Da Nang – Viet Nam, the JoHo Pyro Professional Fireworks AB team (Finland) – the reigning champion of DIFF 2024 brought to DIFF 2025 a performance called: “Nordic Lights”.

The performance by the reigning champion of DIFF 2024 delivered an intense atmosphere, echoing the fierce spirit of Northern Europe. With fiery pop and rock tracks like ‘Diamond Eyes’, ‘Liar’, and ‘Heroes Are Calling’, the audience was drawn into a powerful emotional journey — a story of a people forged amid icy seas and thousands of remote islands.

The first volleys of fireworks burst forth like crashing waves, surging ashore in rapid succession, then suddenly softened to the haunting melody of ‘Stormskärs Maja’ — a Nordic ballad that evoked images of wooden boats drifting silently through the Baltic Sea mist. Water fireworks — the signature technique that secured Finland’s victory at last year’s DIFF — once again took center stage, reimagined with remarkable creativity.

A special highlight of the performance was Finland’s unexpected use of Vietnamese songs such as ‘Bong Phu Hoa’ and ‘Vu Tru Co Bay’ which delighted the audience and added a surprising cultural connection to the show.

Team Finland impressed with a series of high-altitude fireworks launched in rapid succession. The sky lit up with brilliant streaks of green, violet-blue, and vibrant pink, flashing like the aurora borealis – the mesmerizing natural phenomenon of the Nordic region, transporting the audience to the icy skies of Lapland.

Emirates launches Dubai – Bangkok – Da Nang route: Strategic bridge between the Middle East and Southeast Asia

On Monday, Emirates, a globally recognised five-star airline, launched a new route connecting Dubai, Bangkok and Da Nang, the Da Nang Tourism Promotion Centre under the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has announced. This strategic development marks a major step forward in enhancing connectivity, trade, and tourism between the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Emirates has launched a new route connecting Dubai, Bangkok and Da Nang

In detail, Flight EK370 departed from Dubai at 09:00 am (local time), with a transit in Bangkok, and will arrive in Da Nang at 9:50pm (local time). In the reverse direction, Flight EK371 will leave Da Nang at 11:30pm, transit through Bangkok, and land in Dubai at 06:50am the following day.

Emirates operates this route with four flights per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, utilizing state-of-the-art Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, featuring 35 Business Class seats and 368 Economy Class seats.

This marks Da Nang as the third Vietnamese destination in Emirates’ network, following Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City.

In preparation for welcoming international visitors from the Middle East and CIS countries, Da Nang has implemented a series of comprehensive measures following Emirates’ announcement of the new route.

The city has developed and distributed specialized travel guides with market insights, service guidelines, and recommendations for Halal tourism products.

In addition, training programmes have been organized for tourism professionals to improve cultural competency in Islamic traditions and service standards for Middle Eastern travellers, aiming to enhance overall service quality.

Earlier, on April 30, 2025, at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in Dubai, Emirates signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vietnamese conglomerate Sun Group. Under the partnership, Emirates and Sun Group jointly execute marketing and promotional campaigns to position Viet Nam as a premier destination across the airline’s global network.

The two organisations also explore opportunities to host familiarisation trips for media and travel agents from priority markets, enhancing awareness of Viet Nam’s diverse tourism offerings. In addition, the partnership includes promotional programmes and incentives to support travel companies in these key markets.

“The expansion of our network reflects Viet Nam’s growing appeal and our commitment to offering greater choice to travelers. Our partnership with Sun Group presents exciting opportunities to showcase Viet Nam’s culture, heritage, and natural beauty to a broader global audience,” said Mr Orhan Abbas, Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations – Far East at Emirates.

To ensure operational readiness and service excellence, the Da Nang International Airport has collaborated with Emirates to upgrade essential infrastructure, implement an automated immigration control system (Autogate), and prioritise safety and a seamless travel experience for all passengers.

In 2024, Da Nang welcomed 17,429 visitors from the Middle East, primarily from Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iran. As of January 2025, arrivals from the region reached 3,036, accounting for 0.7% of total international visitors, most notably from Saudi Arabia, Israel and Turkey.

Beyond the Middle East, Da Nang is also targeting emerging markets such as the CIS region, including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, with seasonal charter flights from Astana and Almaty running from April to October 2025, further diversifying its inbound tourism portfolio.

The launch of Emirates’ new route marks a significant step in strengthening air connectivity between the Middle East and Central Viet Nam. It opens up new opportunities to attract travellers from the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, as well as from Europe via Emirates’ global hub in Dubai, connecting Da Nang with markets such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia and Thailand.

The move is expected to catalyze a fresh wave of international tourism and position Da Nang as an attractive destination in the Asia-Pacific region. It also reflects the city’s strategic efforts to diversify source markets and elevate service quality in alignment with global standards.

Development potential for rail tourism

The North-South railway line passing through the provinces and cities of Central Viet Nam such as Quang Binh, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Binh Thuan, Ninh Thuan, Binh Dinh and Khanh Hoa brings great potential for diversifying tourism products.

Positive results

The initiative to develop tourist railway routes in the Central region has shown promising initial results from various localities. Today, trains serve not just as a means of transportation but also play a significant role in promoting tourism.

In July 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism and the Viet Nam Railways Corporation. This agreement not only demonstrates a commitment to collaboration between the two industries but also creates new opportunities for promoting sustainable tourism development.

A train route connecting Da Nang and Hue City, named “Central Heritage Connection”, was officially put into operation in March 2024. Passengers on the train route are taken through the majestic Hai Van Pass – one of the most beautiful railway routes in the world.

According to Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee Tran Chi Cuong, the “Central Heritage Connection” journey by train is a practical and attractive product, contributing to diversifying tourism products. At the same time, it is a safe, comfortable, and friendly travel option for tourists, helping to reduce pressure on road traffic, and attract international tourists on the heritage tourism journey of the three localities of Hue – Da Nang – Quang Nam.

Meanwhile, in January 2025, tourists from the luxury tourist train SJourney got off at the Tra Kieu Station in Duy Xuyen District, Quang Nam Province, to explore various unique and renowned green tourism products. These include such attractions as Hoi An Ancient Town, Cam Phu – Go Noi Village in Dien Ban Town, Thanh Ha Pottery Village, and Cam Thanh Coconut Village.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong, the Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam Province, a collaboration agreement has been established between the People’s Committee of Quang Nam Province and the Quang Nam Railway Corporation for the 2024-2030 period. As a result of this cooperation, a Joint Plan has been developed to promote and enhance tourism in Quang Nam and its railways from 2024 to 2026. This plan aims to diversify tourism products, create rail-based tourism products, and increase the number of visitors arriving in Quang Nam via Tra Kieu and Tam Ky stations. Additionally, the plan seeks to expand the “Central Heritage Connection” route, connecting various tourist destinations while fostering partnerships between railways and tourism service providers in the province.

In a similar vein, the operation of two luxury tourist trains on the Da Nang – Quy Nhon and Nha Trang – Quy Nhon routes with 5-star international amenities has greatly contributed to attracting tourists to Binh Dinh Province. According to a report by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Binh Dinh Province, the average number of tourists travelling by train to Dieu Tri and Quy Nhon stations is nearly 600 per day.

More investments in new rail tourism products

According to an assessment by the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism, the rail tourism in the country, including in the Central region, faces several limitations despite its potential and initial successes. The railway infrastructure is not yet modern, and train speeds are slow, failing to meet tourists’ demands for fast travel. Onboard services are unappealing, so there is a need to enhance the quality of carriages, food, and entertainment options. Additionally, the connection between railway stations and tourist attractions is inadequate, and there is no effective transit system in place.

Mr. Ha Van Sieu, Vice Chairman of Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism suggested that Viet Nam can learn from the experiences of many countries in terms of railway tourism. The good examples include the long-standing railway lines serving tourism maintained in many European countries; the “floating” train line running through the Pa Sak Jolasid dam during the rainy season in Thailand; the Panorama Train in Indonesia that offers passengers stunning views of the landscape from Jakarta to Yogyakarta through large glass windows, rotating seats, automatic curtains and many high-end amenities; and the China – Laos train line.

In the context of the upcoming merger between Quang Nam Province and Da Nang, the potential for developing railway tourism in the newly formed Da Nang city is significant.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong, the Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam Province, there are plans for a railway station system connected to the railway lines passing through the area in accordance with the national railway planning. This includes the existing North-South railway line, the North-South high-speed railway line, and the Da Nang – Tay Nguyen railway line.

Additionally, there will be an exploration of investments for two urban railway lines that will connect to the urban railway network in Da Nang. These lines will link Chu Lai International Airport and Hoi An City.

Given these opportunities, Mr. Hong proposed appealing for investment in the development of more typical green and sustainable products of each locality such as culture – art, cuisine, and OCOP products into the railway ecosystem to enhance the experience for travellers. He suggested creating specialised products for entire train cars and groups based on specific requirements, as well as expanding and connecting local areas to establish unique railway tourism products and product chains that would attract tourists. Furthermore, he encouraged travel companies to design new tourism offerings that are associated with railway experiences.

“Rail tourism has significant potential for development in our country, thanks to a railway network that stretches from north to south. This network traverses diverse terrains, including plains, mountains, and coastal areas. As a safe and efficient mode of transportation, rail tourism offers travellers unique and memorable experiences”, Mr. Ha Van Sieu, Vice Chairman of Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism)
